Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete III: Proceedings of an Engineering Foundation Conference, Swabian Conference Center, Irsee, Germany June 9-14, 1996
In Irsee, Germany an international conference on composite construction was held from June 9-14, 1996. It provided a forum for researchers and practitioners involved with composite construction to discuss research findings, new applications, and building code improvements in this fast developing field. All phases of design, construction and research related to steel-concrete composite and mixed systems were discussed. This proceedings contains approximately 80 per cent of the conference presentations. The sessions were organized according to five themes: History, Research, Codes, Case Histories, and Design. The range and timeliness of the papers should make the proceedings interesting to both practicing and research structural engineers.
The design of steel structures has developed over the past hundred years from a simple approach involving a few basic parameters of raw steel and elementary calculations to a more sophisticated treatment demanding a deep know-how of structural behaviour and physical metallurgy. The 
strives to present in a logical manner the theoretical background needed for developing and explaining design requirements. Beginning with the description of a solid background on steel including many references to ongoing research, the development of specific formulas used in the AISC specific is followed by a enormous number of design examples explaining in detail the procedure of selecting minimum weight members to satisfy given requirements for designing a structure.
